A Guide to the NVQ System - Some Questions Answered
What are NVQ's:
NVQ stands for National Vocational Qualifications' - a system which is competence based'. In other words NVQ reflects what people actually do rather what they can write in essays or examinations.
Is it a course:
No. NVQ's are awarded to people when they have demonstrated their ability to do their job effectively. To gain an NVQ, a qualified assessor, using a set of nationally agreed standards assesses a person’s performance in real life situations. Evidence can be gathered through normal working practice although time needs to be set aside for meetings with the assessor and for portfolio building.
Is there a 'pass' or 'fail' in NVQ's:
No you are assessed as 'competent' if you have presented enough evidence of the right kind. If you have not presented sufficient evidence, you are assessed as not 'yet competent'. This means that you might need extra experience, training or study (or a combination of these) to reach the required standard.
Who are NVQ's for:
NVQ's are for anyone in any occupation who wants to acquire a work-based qualification e.g. care staff, childcare workers, and administration staff.
What about Equal Opportunities:
The NVQ system operates within an equal opportunities framework. There are no formal entry requirements. Individual support is designed to meet the needs of all candidates and must be explicitly anti-discriminatory. The assessment Centre carefully monitors this.
How quickly can I achieve an NVQ:
This depends very much on you and your assessor. Candidates should progress at a pace that has been agreed with their assessor according to their individual needs and abilities. Where possible the aim should be to complete an award in 12 - 18 months.
How do I register for an NVQ:
Once you have registered with Abbey Training South West (ATSW) you will be automatically registered with the Awarding Body for the appropriate award. You should receive an enrolment number to confirm this. Registration fees are not refundable; please contact the co-ordinator if you have any other queries.
